What is the Rite of Christian Initiation?

Christian Initiation is a process of formation and conversion that prepares individuals for the reception of the Sacraments of Initiation (Baptism, Confirmation & Eucharist).

The reception of the Sacraments is extremely important, and therefore preparation and necessary readiness is of the highest priority. This explains why RCIC is a long process.

It is a process not a program, because it is dealing with persons who are all at different places in their walk with God.

Liturgy

There are three major liturgical gateways (or rites) in RCIC.  These are very important to the entire process because in them, God gives the grace needed for conversion.

There are periods of teaching and formation followed by the rites, which provide the grace needed to put the teaching into practice. The most important of these rites is the Rite of the Sacraments of Initiation, in which the sacraments themselves are received.

Importance of Grace

Grace is God’s divine life freely shared with us.

Grace is freely given by God as a gift for our benefit. The Christian life cannot be lived without it.

The rites that lead up to reception of the Sacraments of Initiation are so important because they provide grace.
